Beware Japanese Barberry

The Ridgefield Conservation Commission asks residents to be on the lookout for Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) on their properties, a particularly destructive non-native invasive plant that crowds out native plants. It can escape private plantings and is also found growing wild in Ridgefield open spaces. Japanese Barberry poses a risk to humans by providing shelter for white-footed mice, carriers of the black-legged tick that transmits Lyme and other tick-borne diseases to humans. The high humidity and shade provided by Japanese Barberry create a perfect habitat for tick survival. A recent Connecticut-based study shows a dramatic reduction in the number of black-legged ticks found when Japanese Barberry is removed.

Schlumberger 8 year clean up

Schlumberger environmental due diligence period ended and the deal was approved by the board of selectmen with a 3 - 2 vote. The town of Ridgefield will now own the forty acre parcel and Schlumberger is responsible for the few environmental issues. However, it could take eight years for the clean up. Seems like a long time to me. Read full report here at Ridgefield Press.

Schlumberger Approved

Last night at the Yanity Gym, the the Schlumberger referendum was approved 1364 to 881 according to the official town report.

Here was the question posed for vote:

"Shall the resolution making an appropriation of $7,000,000 for the acquisition of 45 acres of land from Schlumberger Technology Corporation on Old Quarry Road in the Town of Ridgefield and authorizing $7,000,000 bonds of the Town to meet said appropriation, be approved?”

To view the contract, download here.

Now, what? There is a 60 day due diligence period for the town to perform environmental checks, etc. Given that Schlumberger performed scientific "oil" research at the now vacant facilities, I suspect their may be additional environmental issues. We already know there was an oil tank leak which contaminated the ground water and beryllium found in the soil at the end of a drain pipe. There was also nuclear material used on the site, but that has been removed and the NRC declared the site safe for unrestricted use. Hmm. Truthfully, I'll be surprised if there are no additional issues found as oil companies are not exactly known for their tree hugger business practices. Granola pessimism aside and assuming everything goes as the town voted, I certainly hope that some of the land can be allocated for open space and maybe a park.
